Dr. Priya Banerjee joined us on WRCN 103.9 FM, LI News Radio, to discuss aspects of death investigation related to the Long Island Serial Killer case. Dr. Banerjee is a Board Certified Forensic Pathologist, consultant, and CEO of Anchor Forensic Pathology, who has conducted over 1500 autopsies and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology at Brown University.
On December 13, 2011, the body of Shannan Gilbert was found in the marsh not far from the community of Oak Beach, Long Island. Shannan was an escort hired by Oak Beach resident Joe Brewer on the night of May 1, 2010. Later that evening, Shannan fled Brewer’s house screaming for help and making a twenty-three-minute phone call. It would be over a year until Suffolk County Police found her skeletal remains. The only two people that knew what happened in that house are Joe Brewer and Shannan Gilbert.
An undetermined Manner of Death requires more investigative steps. What does it mean for investigators? What is a diatom test and why pathologists use it?
