December 10, 2010 was a cold and windy day. The Suffolk County County Police Department stumbled upon a set of human remains in the bramble alongside Ocean Parkway thought to belong to missing escort Shannan Gilbert, however, it wasn’t. Over the next few days a grisly dumping ground revealing four bodies were discovered. The four sets of remains were wrapped in burlap, a detail that should have never been released to the media since the killer would have been the only person that knew.
What transpired next was truly shocking. Over the course of the next few months, a total of ten sets of human remains were found scattered up and down Ocean Parkway. Still, there were no signs of Shannan Gilbert. All we knew was that Long Island had another serial killer on its hands.
New York Times Best Selling Author, Robert Kolker, took the story head on. In his book, Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery, he delves into the human side of things: who were these girls, what were they like, and who were their families. These were people, they had real dreams and now they needed justice. Will they ever get it? That remains to be seen.
I had an opportunity to sit down with Bob and discuss his book and the Long Island Serial Killer case. It is a fascinating story with twists, turns and more than a usual amount of frustration in solving it.
